What is the Season of Service?

The Season of Service puts the love of Jesus Christ into action as the physical needs of a community are met. It establishes and strengthens networks of churches and business and civic leaders for the purpose of serving the community. Individual volunteers are then mobilized through these networks.

Many churches are already serving their communities through service projects, but the Season of Service opens more opportunities for expanded and sustainable partnerships. A greater platform is established for being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. Unity, collaboration, and innovation abound as needs are met and people are blessed.

With the help of your church the Season of Service can flourish. This generation can be reached for Jesus Christ. Together, we can participate in meeting the physical, urgent needs of our world. As Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

How do I bring the Season of Service to my city?

A Season of Service campaign usually begins when churches come together to coordinate the activities they are already doing to serve their communities. This allows for a more strategic allocation of resources. Once a strong network of churches is established, areas of city-wide focus can be defined and project opportunities discussed.

At this point, churches and local governmental leaders meet to dialog how this network of churches might be able to address the area’s greatest needs. Set out a timeline and recruit other churches and businesses to come alongside as you carry out your projects. Then, at the end of your “season,” plan a celebration event that incorporates the entire community.

What is a Season of Service project?

Projects and volunteer opportunities for the Season of Service must meet a tangible need in the community. Projects are for the purpose of improving the life of another person or group of people in a physical or emotional way.

The Season of Service, and the Luis Palau Association do not allow opportunities to be posted that are primarily focused on fundraising, public and private advocacy for or demonstrations against specific moral and/or religious political positions, organizations, political parties and/or political candidates. Posted projects of this nature will be flagged as inappropriate and removed.

What are the Season of Service emphasis areas?

The Season of Service has many project emphasis areas. They’ll get you thinking creatively about where and how you can serve. Some cities have focused on:

  • Education / Schools
  • Homelessness
  • Health and Wellness
  • Hunger/Poverty
  • Neighborhoods
  • Existing Projects

How do I get my church / organization/ business involved?

  1. Investigate different project / service ideas that your group can organize and carry out.
  2. Identify a project coordinator to facilitate your project(s).
  3. Network with other churches and organizations in your immediate area to join you.

How do I recruit volunteers?

Here are some ideas to help promote your project and recruit volunteers:

  • Announce your project in person at your church or organization
  • Post the opportunity on a community bulletin board in your church or organization
  • Send an email blast
  • Pass out flyers in your neighborhood or near the project site
  • Offer an incentive for volunteering, like a free T-shirt, a potluck/picnic/barbeque before or after the project, give-aways throughout the service project (like bottles of sunscreen, chap stick, gift certificates, Frisbees, etc.), and more.  Be creative!
